Dog training does not require you to be an all-commanding power. It only requires that you keep a few, simple basics at hand. There are three techniques, that once mastered, will have you commanding everything in sight. The first of the three is to remember to show your dog who is in charge. Make sure he understands that you, not he, are the boss. Second, find a tone of voice, which you will use when giving commands to your dog, one which will let your dog know who is in charge. Finally, consistency and routine are a must, and should always be kept in mind.

Although your puppy will undoubtedly be absolutely adorable, hence the term “puppy face,” you should not let this get in the way of proper obedience. Your dog should always know who is in charge, and should learn early on that it is not he who is the boss, but you. This is the best way to teach your puppy the basics, such as house-training and what not to chew. You should set boundaries and limits with your puppy, as with a child, from early on, and this will teach your pup right from wrong. Make sure you use voice commands and also gestures, such as stamping a foot or pointing, to help your dog learn proper cues.

Dogs don’t actually grasp the concept of words, per say; however, they definitely understand tone-of-voice. The tone of your voice lets your dog know what your mood is, and also what you expect from your dog. A very firm, strict-sounding voice lets your dog know when to stay put, when to sit, when “no” means no, etc. A happy, cheery voice lets your dog know that you are pleased or that you want to play. Tone of voice is exactly what you need to establish in order to begin good communication with your dog, and to let him know what you expect from him and when.

Most importantly, be consistent, consistent, consistent! Do not slacken when you are trying to teach your dog a certain command. Keep the same techniques for the same commands ever repetitive. For example, when housebreaking your puppy, do not spank for one indiscretion, and yell and place outside for another. This does not teach your dog, and it actually confuses him on what he should be doing. Do not give him conflicting orders that may ultimately be confusing. Another way to work on consistency is to establish routines. Take him out at the same time everyday for walks, use a certain leash for walks, and another for vet visits, or give him the same goodbye pat each time you leave the house so that he knows you will return.

All of these techniques will help you to have a more happy, healthy relationship with your dog, especially if you couple them with lots of love and affection. Your dog will learn quickly what you expect from him, and will be able to give you what you want more efficiently. You will also learn how to better predict your dog’s behavior. Don’t forget the rewards and praise too.

Below are the things you should know to train a puppy and a full grown canine. You can modify these approaches to fit the personality of your dog as these are guidelines, not hard and fast rules.

Puppy training

Puppy training can be engaging, rewarding and fun with the mind set. Remember, puppies are playful, so getting and keeping their attention is the key to success.

1. Train early - young pups are very enthusiastic and alert, in fact, you can start training a puppy that is only a week old. The best way to do this is to set boundaries and rules and enforce them strictly. Don’t let the puppy jump up on you and be sure to have treats handy to point out behaviors that are good.

2. Reward - Make great fan fare out of each accomplishment so they understand what they are being rewarded for. While some leniency is of course allowed, be sure to offset broken rules with reinstatement as often as possible. In time, the puppy will understand the difference between being allowed a special reprieve and what is acceptable on a regular basis.

3. House/Crate training - the quickest way to house train a puppy is to place it in a crate. This is because dogs hate to soil their living area and will treat this space like a “den”. You can then take them out of the crate and deliver them outside so they can eliminate. The crate itself, if made comfortable, will become their go to place for a bit of R and R so they won’t “go” anywhere near it. Only keep your pet in the crate when you are home and be sure to let your pup out at night ritualistically.

4. Breaking the biting/chewing habit - all animals, especially baby ones, enjoy biting and mouthing objects. When they nip on furniture or a hand or foot, they are not aware they are doing anything wrong. One way to break this habit is to allow them to play with other pups. Puppies play rough and react negatively when the biting becomes too much. This peer pressure allows them to understand that biting is unacceptable. The purchase of chew toys allows them to get the biting urge sated so they are less apt to bite or mouth other objects.

Dog training

Dog training can be a tad more complex and often fall into the realm of obedience.

1. Leash training - the trick to getting a full grown dog to accept a leash it to make them understand the leash is not a punishment. If you get them to associate pleasant things, like walks or an outdoor jaunt with a leash they will actually look forward to seeing it. Don’t let them react in an out of control fashion and let them know that any disobedient behavior will delay their walk and they will be better behaved. Also, learn to walk with great long strides or to trot with your dog so they feel hampered by the leash.

2. Obeying “come” - your dog will obey almost any command when something positive is attached to it. Far too often a pet parent only asks the dog to come to them when they seek to punish the animal or leash them. If the dog can associate positive memories to the experience, they will be more likely to behave in a positive manner to the command.

These few small tips can work in conjunction with one another no matter the age of your pet. As always, keep in mind your dog’s temperament and respect the independence of the animal as you train them to coexist with the humans and other animals.

Dogs are intelligent enough to learn several hundred words, but single word commands are much easier for your dog to understand. If you want him to lie down, teach your dog the command ‘lie’ or ‘down’. He will pick it up much faster. Use the same command every time for the desired act, not ‘lie’ one day, and ‘down’ the next. Consistency with punishment is also very important. Punishing your dog for something one day and not the next will only frustrate your dog. Punishment as well as everything else involved in dog training must be uniform.

The younger they are, the more important exercise and playtime are to them. A tired dog is a happy dog. Be sure your dog meets your neighbors and their dogs. This is why it is so very important to educate yourself on this type of thing so that you do not lose your patience when attempting to train your older dog. No one has told him the mail carrier shouldn’t be chased down the block, or Granny should be treated with gentleness and not jumped upon with love, the lovely garden that mother just planted needs to stay earthed, and the sprinklers are not something to be killed. Your dog, with all his creative exploration of behavior options like the counter surfing, chasing cars, chewing your favorite leather shoes and so on, is really just that dog looking for a job, and if she doesn’t find one they are sure to create one. Your dog is looking for someone to show him about how things are, to keep him safe, to prepare his meals and most importantly, someone to spend time with them. All he really wants to know is what are the boundaries and rules. Dogs of all types, temperaments, and breeds will behave in this manner without a strong base of training and discipline from their owner.

The electronic dog training collar is a modern day invention that is aimed at modifying your dog’s behavior. It is commonly referred to as a ‘mild coercion’ technique used predominantly to renounce a dog from doing what it is not supposed to do. The key word here is mild, and this is certainly subjective in nature. Before going into the troubles which this method causes and the wide-ranging opinions people carry on about its legitimacy, it would be handy to know what this technique is all about.

The electronic dog collar transmits a signal onto the skin of the dog through a sensor or a probe. The intensity of the signal can be varied up or down by using a remote control, which transmits it wirelessly to a receiver which is connected to the collar. The remote used with most all collars will have a range of 100-300 feet. The signal causes pain and discomfort to the dog, which leads him to associate this reaction with the behavior exhibited upon instruction.

It is looked upon by many as an act of cruelty being performed, while others perceive it as a medium which complements verbal training. However, it is essential to know how to use the collar effectively, failing which the dog might get intimidated by it and would do his level best to avoid pain. He might run as far and as fast as he can until the pain subsides, or he would try to remain attached to his owner as long as possible, thwarting his own independence. This would actually be tantamount to taking a U- turn from our main objective, which is to promote good behavior within the dog.

Before starting with this technique, take your dog into confidence. Be patient and allow him to take his own time. What you desire is that the collar acts a stimulus to solicit the required action immediately after the verbal command has been repeated. Ensure that during the training phase your dog doesn’t yap or become in pain. Of course, you will also want to determine the threshold level of your dog without going overboard.

This training tool, if used correctly and in moderation, can make your dog a role model for others Used incorrectly it can easily result in more harm than good. This is why I can not personally recommend this method of dog training. Few owners take the time to really understand how to use it properly. There are other, much better methods available than using an electronic dog training collar.
